what does the cost of an uber tell us about the wages of a country?

having travelled around europe, i started thinking about how uber pricing can be used as a proxy for a lot of things about a country.

uber drivers in the uk typically earn somewhere between 0.9-1.5x minimum wage post expenses. that ratio feels pretty consistent across cities i've been to, even in countries without a specified minimum wage. so you can basically use uber pricing as a proxy for the local living wage.

the interesting cases are where pricing diverges from what you'd expect. in cities with heavy tourism, prices are higher than the local wage would suggest because the customer base skews wealthier. in cities where uber competes heavily with local taxis, prices are suppressed.

could do a proper data analysis on this - comparing uber base rates against minimum wage by country, average income by percentile, tourism intensity, cost of living indices. and then intra-country comparisons, like london vs. manchester vs. leeds.

it's a cheap and widely available data source that might actually tell you more about ground-level wages than official statistics do.
